Mexico hotel sets new standard in ecotourism

Visitors with an interest in green tourism can find out about Hotel Xcaret, which is currently under construction in Mexico and which will be the first hotel to have an EarthCheck certification for its planning and design when it opens next year.

The 900-room all-suite luxury ocean-front resort is due to open in December 2017 in the Maya Riviera, the first accommodation made from start to finish by the consortium Grupo Experiencias Xcaret, which prides itself on its commitment to sustainability, social responsibility and innovation.

The hotel is the first of the group’s planned nine-hotel project that will see 5,500 rooms added to the Riviera Maya over a 20-year period.

The complex will be within the award-winning Xcaret Park, in a section known as Destiny Xcaret, according to Miguel Quintana Pali, architect and president of Grupo Experiencias Xcaret.

Nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the luscious tropical jungle of Playa del Carmen, the hotel will offer unique, authentic sustainable holiday experiences through an innovative programme featuring award-winning nature parks, archeological tours, transportation, bespoke gastronomy and entertainment that celebrates and preserves Mexican culture.

The Xcaret Park was founded under the premise of using the natural wealth for the enjoyment of visitors, in a respectful manner and without compromising their future viability.

Experiencias Xcaret attractions today integrate activities in 10 different ecosystems, which places the group as a leader in Mexico in sustainable tourist recreation, according to EarthCheck.

EarthCheck is the certification programme in environmental management most recognised in the world. In recent years it has focused its efforts on helping organisations in the tourism industry to improve performance and protect the environment.
