Cape Town has experienced significant rainfall during the southern hemisphere winter and as a result, dam levels are now more than 60% full.
These are the highest levels since 2016, so authorities have confirmed that ‘Day Zero’ – the projected date when Cape Town further reduces the supply of water to its citizens – will not take place in 2018 or 2019.
As well as increased rainfall, the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape provincial government, the tourism industry and Capetonians alike have all worked together to reduce water usage by nearly 60% in just three years – a phenomenal achievement unmatched by any other major city in the world.
Restrictions on water usage are still in place to ensure that water is preserved, managed effectively and that dam levels continue to rise.
Tourism bodies say it is important that holidaymakers continue to visit Cape Town to help drive investment in this sustainable future.
