Iconic White Fort To Reopen In Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi city’s oldest stone building, Qasr al Hosn, will reopen in late 2018 following extensive restoration work.

Built in 1761 to defend the only fresh-water well on Abu Dhabi Island, Qasr Al Hosn – also known as the White Fort – has become a symbol of Emirati heritage.

Following years of restoration, the iconic fort will open to the public in late 2018, showcasing historical artefacts, photographs and memorabilia in the museum and visitor centre.

Other highlights being showcased at WTM London by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) include the Special Olympics World Games (14-21 March 2019); developments on Yas Island; and a partnership with Airbnb.

The Special Olympics 2019 World Summer Games will be held in the Middle East for the first time, and the tournament will host 7,000 Special Olympians from 170 nations.

The latest project on Yas Island – Abu Dhabi’s leisure and entertainment destination – is CLYMB, which will be the world’s widest flight chamber and tallest indoor climbing wall.

Opening in 2019, the flight chamber will enable visitors to mimic the experience of skydiving, while the climbing wall will tower 43 metres above the ground.

Finally, DCT Abu Dhabi has partnered with accommodation website Airbnb to promote Emirati Experiences.

These are 20 tours and experiences led by Emirati nationals which provide insight into Emirati culture, heritage and history.
