Carbon emissions are the subject of a conference at WTM Latin America

The responsible tourism programme will discuss ways of helping reduce the pollutant in the environment

As in previous editions, responsible tourism has its place in WTM Latin America 2019. This recurring issue is one of the pillars and premises of all events in the WTM portfolio and, in addition to contributing to our collective awareness of the subject, boosts best practice among all those involved in the industry. In this edition, in addition to the launch of the responsible tourism award, the programme includes two panels that will discuss the direction of the segment and the importance of our collective conscience: “Where next with certification?” and “How can travel and tourism best reduce the carbon emissions of our industry?” The panels will take place in the Inspire Theatre on 3 April and 4 April at 13:00. Access is free and there is a limited number of places.

The panel on certifications will invite participants to reflect on the next generation of certifications, since there is evidence that travellers are hoping for more sustainable services. With the imposition of this new profile of consumer, who is looking for and demanding clear and reliable information regarding the efficiency of the use of natural resources and the social and economic impacts generated by the tourism chain, the trade is looking for alternative ways of reinventing itself and doing better. Gustavo Pinto, adviser for WTM Latin America’s responsible tourism programme; Alexandre Eliasquevitch Garrido, coordinator of the Sustainable Tourism ISO working group (ISO/TC228/WG 13) and coordinator of the ABNT’s Sustainable Tourism studies’ committee, Sextante Consultoria; Erica Lobos, manager for Mexico and Latin America, Earth Check; and Teresa Llusá, Social Director, Bioenergía Andina/Green Tourism, will discuss the topic.

The second panel, which will take place on Wednesday, 3 April, will raise questions about ways of reducing carbon emissions and helping the environment. The climate is changing and incidents are happening with increasing frequency: forest fires, heat-waves, sea-level flooding and extreme weather events are there to remind us of impact that human actions have on nature. Reducing the emission of greenhouse gases in all parts of the tourist chain is an imperative. Marcos Silveira Buckeridge, a professor and director of the Institute of Biosciences, University of São Paulo – USP; Alessia Kossmehl, Head of Projects at Condor Travel, and Gustavo Pinto will analyse these issues to offer their insights and suggest the good practices the market should adopt.

Tourism is today responsible for 11% of the world’s carbon emissions. We know the potential this segment represents for economies worldwide. But if we want to grow sustainably in this chain, we need to discuss the issue, raise awareness and prepare those best practices that minimize this effect in the industry,” Gustavo concluded.

Open to: travel and tourism professionals; members of the press (restricted credentials for publishers, journalists, photographers, broadcasters and bloggers/influencers); government authorities and buyers (only those buyers who meet the program’s criteria can receive a WTM Buyers’ Club badge).
