The Loro Parque Fundacion (LPF) has won a prestigious World Travel Market 2015 World Travel Leaders Award in recognition of its continued work of the conservation of the world’s most threatened species and ecosystems.
The foundation received the coveted award today (Tuesday 3 November) at the WTM World Travel Leaders Award ceremony. The award was presented by director of Hosteltur, Manuel Molina and was collected by CEO of LPF, Christoph Kiessling.
The Awards give WTM London’s Official Media Partners – which represent key travel industry media around the world – an excellent platform to congratulate and recognise those companies and individuals that have made significant and ground-breaking contributions to travel and tourism in their region or sector.
Three nominations from each of WTM London’s media partners were judged in September by a panel of three, consisting of an independent body, a representative of WTM and the relevant media partner.
The LPF, founded by the Kiessling family in 1994, operates internationally to conserve threatened parrot and marine mammal species and their habitats. Although the foundation is based in Tenerife, its work covers the forests in Central and South America, West Africa, the Caribbean, South-East Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands and the mid-Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.
Forests and oceans are a vital factor in climate stabilisation while more than 1.6 billion people depend on forest for their livelihoods and 1 billion people depend on fish for their primary source of protein.
LPF’s objectives are achieved through teaching and research projects, as well as with responsible breeding programmes and conservation activities. These initiatives have been supported by many businesses and private companies which sponsor the Foundation and contribute each year so that the objectives can be realised. The investments have reached more than $15million during 96 projects in five continents.
However, as a non-profit conservation NGO, 100% of the income goes towards the conservation projects and LPF invests $2.5million a year in nature through the foundation. The foundation’s continued work and success since 1994 led to the judges saying: “Loro Parque has, for many years, been a beacon of private sponsored support for the environment. This award is in recognition of their cumulative achievements over the last 20 years.”
