The travel industry needs a single sustainability certification system to avoid ‘greenwashing’, a WTM London panel agreed.
Around 150 tourism labelling schemes exist, some of them paid-for, the session heard.
Chris Haslam chief travel writer at The Times and Sunday Times, said the current situation was “totally, completely confusing”. “It’s akin to the Wild West of Covid vaccinations when the government let anyone with a beauty parlour in.” He called for a single star rating system instead.
“The UNWTO could run it rather than someone charging £15,000 to get a badge.”
Holly Tuppen, a sustainable travel specialist writer, said the issue of labelling was reaching “optimum rant” and something would be done soon. “I do think change is coming,” she said.
Haslem said he had little faith anything would come from the COP27 summit, where tourism was being discussed for one hour on the final day. “It’s old white men digging in to protect their pensions, their portfolios over the state of the planet,” he said.
He added sustainability was consistently sold as a compromise, labelling this a PR failure. “It’s lentils rather than luxury. It’s up to us to redefine what it is.”
He said the current image of luxury dated back to the 1970s, with things like Wagyu beef flown in from Japan to desert islands portrayed as aspirational. “If there’s no Wagyu beef, everyone would have the fish.” Such conspicuous consumption was now “as morally acceptable as drink driving”, he added.
He believed changes in sustainability generally would start with the luxury sector and filter down to the mass market.
Green Traveller founder Richard Hammond said reaching net zero was about greenhouse gases in total, “not just carbon”. He cautioned about the emergence of ‘green hushing’, where brands were afraid to talk about initiatives for fear of being accused of greenwashing despite genuinely making progress.
