Commercial space travel will prompt a new industrial revolution that will far outweigh the environmental damage it causes, a leading exponent has claimed.
Speaking at WTM London, Will Whitehorn, chair, Seraphim Space Investment, said new launches will enable the “industrialisation of space”.
Whitehorn said the space industry’s image of the rich joyriding was misunderstood despite the estimated 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emitted for each flight. “People think it’s for scientists and billionaires – space is the only way we are going to get to net zero with a population of nine billion.”
He explained more rocket launches would permit, for example, solar panels in space to harvest clean energy, while satellites could spot irregularities in crops, stopping diseases before they spread.
He described how GPS tracking already meant 12% less food globally was spoiled in transit, while newer technology now enabled the tracking of illegal shark fin fishing boats from space.
“What’s coming around the corner is dramatic; the media has not caught up with it. If these billionaires have enhanced the technology to get the tech into space, I think it’s worth it. If we stop doing this, we will never get to net zero.”
Further developments would mean less damaging hypersonic travel, at around 120,000 feet, could offer London-New York in 30 minutes, he predicted. This will be enabled by composite aircraft, artificial intelligence and new microchips, a combination previously unavailable. “I think there is a market for that.”
The industry was set up to do “a little bit of space tourism” he said. He compared the $350-$400,000 price tag of current space tourism to the cost of the PanAm transatlantic Clipper crossing in 1939 – $150,000 at today’s prices.
Whitehorn added space tourism was “one of the reasons these ventures have been launched”. He tipped his former employer Virgin Galactic to eventually operate a space station hotel using new inflatable pod technology.
