La Perle: how a resident show can boost Dubai’s economy

When you mention Dubai to a tourist, it conjures images of the Burj Khalifa, sunny beaches and, of course, a shopping metropolis. Until now, other than a sensational choice of bars, nightclubs and restaurants, the region’s entertainment scene has been somewhat one-dimensional, that is until the dawn of a new era in entertainment arrives, La Perle.

Located in the heart of Dubai at Al Habtoor City, La Perle will be the region’s first permanent show boasting 450 performances per year in a tailor-made state-of-the-art aqua-theatre. The show is produced by cultural creative company Dragone, directed by the legendary artistic director Franco Dragone, famed for the hit shows Le Rêve, The House of Dancing Water and Celine Dion’s spectacular, A New Day.

So, how will a resident show help boost Dubai’s economy? If you look across the pond, in 2015, 65 percent of the 41 million visitors to Las Vegas bought tickets to see resident shows*. In fact, since 1999, gaming no longer accounts for most of Las Vegas’ revenues. The trends are not just abundant the US, in 2012 alone, ticket sales from caberet shows in Paris amounted to €88.6million**.

In line with Dubai’s Tourism Vision for 2020 for Dubai to be positioned as the ‘first choice’ for international leisure and business travellers, La Perle brings an entirely new genre of always-on entertainment. The show further expands Dubai’s tourist offering and attracts new tourist segments to the destination for the first time, for previous tourists to return and for all to stay longer.

La Perle will encapsulate the spirit of Dubai, providing tourists with a show that’s not only visually stunning, but becomes a cultural experience that is unable to be replicated anywhere else in the world.

Having a live entertainment show such as this one brings much more value to the city than to just the venue itself; It typically has a positive effect on the entire economy and a wide number of stakeholders from the airlines to the restaurants and of course the hotels who will be competing to offer the most attractive show and stay package. It also creates jobs for the local economy. Broadway, for example, supports around 87,000 jobs in New York***.

With the first performance commencing in 2017, La Perle will bring a new depth to the entertainment offering in the region, the likes of which have never seen before.
