Brits are more active on holiday but less likely to eat healthily, reveals the World Travel Market 2015 Industry Report, released today (Monday 2 November) at World Travel Market London.
Three out of ten (29%) of people who took a holiday in the past year do more exercise, including activities such as walking, biking or hiking while on holiday. A similar amount (28%) admits to indulging in unhealthy food more than they would at home.
Only one in 10 (11%) say they eat more healthily while away, with 15% saying they exercise less on holiday. The rest say their exercise and eating habits don’t change on holiday.
The findings are in line with other recent statistics, which show almost half (44%) of Brits are more likely to work out on holiday than they would have done five years ago. The key motivating factor is to be able to indulge in holiday food guilt-free, according to research undertaken by Club Med in summer 2015.
However, while Brits may be working out more, we are still less active than many other nationalities. Expedia’s Flip Flop Report (2014), ranks Brits as the third laziest in the world, behind Japanese and Thai holidaymakers, with one in five admitting they ‘can’t be bothered’ to go swimming or do other watersports.
World Travel Market London, Senior Director, Simon Press said: “A holiday is a break from the normal routine, so naturally many people have more time on their hands.
“Our research shows a third of Brits keep busy by being more active – going to the gym, the pool, sightseeing or going on a bike ride – with a similar number admitting to dining on ‘unhealthy’ holiday food.
“As long as Brits return to their healthier eating habits once home, a little indulgence is fine – it’s a holiday after all!”
