Why Slovenia at WTM Virtual:

Celebrate Green Gastronomy in Slovenia, European Region of Gastronomy 2021

Slovenia combines a rich natural larder and historic food traditions with influences spanny Italy in the west, and Austria and Hungary to the east. Pair this with world-class chefs, a new Michelin guide and a calendar full of culinary events, and it is easy to understand why Slovenia will celebrate next year having been named European Region of Gastronomy 2021.

In 2020, the first ever Michelin guide to Slovenia was unveiled, with a total of 52 restaurants and six chefs being awarded a total of seven Michelin stars. Amongst these is Ana Ros, named the world’s best female chef in 2017 and now proud owner of two Michelin stars at her restaurant Hiša Franko. This November Slovenia will unveil the new ‘green gastronomy’ video, which provides a unique insight into all six Michelin star chefs. Viewers will enjoy a taste of the unspoiled nature and the wonderful environment that help create a variety of unique local ingredients including cheese, mushrooms and wine.

A Tour de Force of cycling adventures in Slovenia

Slovenia entered sporting history this year as Tadej Pogacar became the first Slovenian to win the Tour de France’s coveted yellow jersey, as well as being the second youngest overall winner in the race’s history. In addition to this, fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic came in second place, confirming Slovenia as one of the finest destinations for producing world class cyclists.

In celebration of this latest momentous sporting achievement, 2021 could be the year to experience your own Slovenian cycling adventure. Train like a Tour de France champion along 232km of alpine roads that weave from Bled, Bohinj, towards Soča Valley. Alternatively, go green on the world’s first sustainable cycling trail, ‘Bike Slovenia Green’, which exclusively connects green-certified locations.
