Sustainability in Tourism: From Rhetoric to Action — and an Invitation to Inspire the Sector

Sustainability in Tourism: From Rhetoric to Action — and an Invitation to Inspire the Sector

*By BRAZTOA (Associação Brasileira das Operadoras de Turismo)

In recent years, speaking about sustainability in tourism has ceased to be a trend and has become a necessity. More than just a topic for events and reports, it is a call for responsibility and transformation — from destinations, businesses, travellers, and the entire tourism value chain.

After all, what kind of tourism do we wish to leave as our legacy? And furthermore: what kind of tourism can continue to exist without sustainability?

It is no longer a matter of choice or competitive advantage. Sustainability is a prerequisite for the continuity of our sector. It is a matter of business viability, commitment to the planet, and responsibility towards future generations.

The way we travel affects territories, communities, ecosystems, and cultures. At the same time, tourism holds immense power to generate opportunities, celebrate traditions, preserve the environment, and stimulate local economies. But this only happens when there is intention, strategy, and purpose.

The Sector’s Role: Building Viable Pathways

Sustainability in tourism is not an abstract concept — it is reflected in everyday choices: in supporting local entrepreneurs, respecting cultural heritage, reducing environmental impact, and creating experiences that foster a sense of belonging and regeneration.

That is why initiatives that share good practices, recognise those already making a difference, and inspire new approaches are essential.

Our pursuit to build and contribute to this path led us, 13 years ago, to conceive and launch the Braztoa Sustainability Award. It is precisely in this spirit that the Award was born and has grown stronger each year, recognising and valuing those who are transforming tourism into a positive force for Brazil.

An Invitation to Showcase the Change You’re Creating

If you are part of a project, company, community or initiative that is transforming realities through tourism — or if you know someone who is — now is the time to show it to Brazil. Entries for the 2025 Braztoa Sustainability Award are now open, and this could be the opportunity to amplify your story, build connections, and inspire even more change.

In 2025, the Award ceremony will take place in Belém do Pará, host city of COP30 and a symbol of the need to view the Amazon as a strategic part of the planet’s future. For the first time, initiatives from the Amazon region will receive bonus points. A new category exclusively for local communities will also be introduced, recognising the leadership of Indigenous peoples, quilombolas, riverine communities, caiçaras and many other vital voices.

Get Involved. Share. Inspire!

The transformation of tourism depends on each and every choice. And recognising those already putting sustainability into practice is essential for multiplying this movement.

Register. Help spread the word. And be part of this future that begins now.
