Pakulala Safari Camp is perched on the Ngorongoro Crater Ring (Tanzania) at more than 2,500 meters above sea level and overlooking the volcano’s caldera.
If there is one thing that strikes travelers at Pakulala Safari Camp, it is the spectacular views of the volcano’s crater. No one in Ngorongoro has a better view than this to contend with in absolute freedom around the campfire. The sunset is one of the highlights of this charming establishment in the middle of the wilderness.
Situated in Maasai territory, at an altitude of over 2,500 meters, this exclusive camp – the only one on Ngorongoro’s crater ring – is one of the most complete options to feel the atmosphere of the old African expeditions with the comforts of the 21st century.
At dawn, the only thing seeping through the seams of the eleven canvas tents at Pakulala Safari Camp is the sound of moving wildlife that permanently inhabits the volcanic caldera of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (the largest stable population of wildlife in Africa). Guests can expect a day of safari they will remember forever. The adventure begins with the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural spectacle where they are likely to spot the Big Five.
The decoration
The eleven tents, equipped with two double beds, private bathroom and shower, eco-friendly toilet, and solar lighting, follow the principles of ecotourism and sustainability that characterise East Africa Camps, the hotel chain that owns this accommodation, part of the Ratpanat Group.
Safari chairs, communal tables and lanterns complete a décor in which Maasai culture is very present, such as the blankets with which travelers wrap themselves each night around the campfire.
In their commitment and respect for the environment, many of the decorative elements are handmade by local artisans, such as the butterfly chairs or the hand-woven rugs made of natural fiber by the Mbulu women’s community. The team is made up of members from the local communities and young women in social exclusion who are given professional training as cooks or camp assistants to help them get out of their dramatic personal situation and giving them a chance for a dignified life.
