Taking Responsibility for Safety and Security

Taking Responsibility for Safety and Security

We all know that the safety and security of tourists is vital for successful, resilient tourism but different countries and regions face varying challenges.  For countries and destinations, reputational risks can be high when incidents happen, whether they are caused by natural disasters, health scares, crime, conflicts, or actions by terrorists. The protection of tourists, investments and livelihoods is essential.

So, what can be done to minimise the risks and create greater resilience and what measures should be in place in destinations to provide reassurance to visitors? No absolute guarantees can be given to visitors but balanced information should be available to them to make up their own minds about where to travel.

At WTM London, the event where Ideas Arrive, an expert panel on taking responsibility for safety and security will tackle these issues head on.

Most of this work occurs behind the scenes. This is an important opportunity to hear about how various challenges are managed and to discuss where improvements might be made.

Hear how Spain, with more than 80 million international tourists, has developed a successful set of actions, from avoiding petty crimes through to counter-terrorism.

Panelists will also make valuable contributions from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean will come together with the worldwide consumer perspective provided by ABTA, to give clear and informative advice on this topic.

The panel will include:

Moderator: Martin Brackenbury, Managing Partner, Brackenbury & Partners

German Porras, former Secretary of Tourism For Spain, currently Secretary-General Mesa Del Turismo

John Amaratunga, Minister of Tourism Development, Wildlife & Christian Religious Affairs,   Sri Lanka

Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica

Amos Fish Mahlalela Deputy Minister of the Department of Tourism of the Republic of South Africa

Nikki White Director of Destinations and Sustainability at ABTA
