Dominican Republic will bring a flavour of its famous party atmosphere to WTM London 2017 and offer the chance to win a place on a fam trip.
The island, surrounded by the Atlantic to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, is known for its carnivals.
A Dom Rep Carnival character will be at the country’s stand, in the Caribbean Village, every day during WTM.
Agents who take a selfie with the character and tweet it to @dominicanrep_UK can win a place on a fam trip and experience for themselves the destination, which has 1,000 miles of coastline, 250 miles of top beaches, as well as plenty to do in the way of sports, recreation and entertainment.
In addition, visitors can experience astounding nature, intriguing history and rich cultural experiences like music, art and festivals, plus uniquely Dominican specialties such as cigars, rum, chocolate, coffee, merengue, amber and larimar.
Carnival is one of the most colourful traditions in the Dominican Republic, and carnival season, which runs from February to March, is celebrated in the streets of many local villages, towns and cities.
With origins dating back to 1520, Dominican Carnival is a tradition inherited from Spanish forefathers and each city has a unique celebration with parades every Sunday of the month.
The colourful devilish masks – accompanied by the satirical, the grotesque, and images of daily lives and a world of imaginary figures, are essential to the Carnival atmosphere.
Local tour operators offer visitors tour packages to the country’s most popular and colourful Carnival celebrations.
Tours are organised to Carnival celebrations held in the central region towns of La Vega and Santiago, as well as to the big Carnival celebration in Santo Domingo.
