New initiatives to encourage and welcome tourism planned for 2026

At PROMPERÚ, we are strongly committed to promoting sustainability in tourism. “Peru is a journey to the origin: living culture, protected nature, and communities proudly sharing their history and traditions. A destination where every step inspires, transforms, and lives on within you.”

PROMPERÚ took part in the first documentary produced by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), being the only Latin American country featured.

How community-led tourism is protecting Huascarán National Park

Set in the majestic Huascarán National Park, recognised in the 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories, this upcoming film follows local adventure guide Martin Romero Wolf as he travels through one of Peru’s most iconic and fragile landscapes. Along the way, we meet park officials and community members who are working hand-in-hand to show what regenerative tourism looks like in action — where visitors don’t just witness beauty but help protect it.

Through shared meals, locally guided hikes, and community-run tourism initiatives, this story highlights how conservation, culture, and economic resilience are deeply interconnected in Ancash.

From melting glaciers to rising visitor numbers, the stakes are high — but so is the commitment to sustainable, locally led travel.

The new US$2 billion Jorge Chavez International Airport opened in Lima in June 2025 and is expected to handle up to 40 million passengers by 2026. It features a unique hummingbird inspired design honouring the Nazca Lines, the mysterious geoglyphs cut into Peru’s Pampa Colorada.

Increasingly, visitors are hiking to less-visited ruins such as Choquequirao or along Qhapaq Nan.

Rising more than 4,700 meters above sea level, Pallay Punchu—nicknamed Peru’s new Rainbow Mountain, is a sacred landscape, where nature and culture converge to tell the story of the Andes through colours, silence, and spirit. Just beyond Pallay Punchu lies another hidden jewel – the Langui Layo Lagoon, a vast mirror of water at nearly 4,000 meters above sea level. Its deep blues and silvery reflections change with the skies, sheltering trout farms and wild Andean birds such as wallatas and gaviotas.

Recently excavated Peñico, the ‘City of Social Integration’, added to the Caral Archaeological Zone making four Peruvian sites more ancient than Machupicchu and equally as impressive.

A multicoloured three-dimensional wall that could date back 4,000 years has recently been discovered in the Huaca Yolanda excavation site in the Tanguche valley in Peru’s La Libertad region.

Arequipa, which became a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2019, has seen an influx of visitors due to its culinary offering and flurry of new high-design hotels.

Exquisite new luxury design hotels, many from local operator Andean, have opened in remote locations like the Colca Valley (PUQUIO) and in the Tinajani Canyon (Tinajani). There is also the exquisite Palacio Guaqui in Arequipa – the latest addition to Ananay’s boutique hotel offering in Peru and perhaps its most luxurious and unique, allowing guests to stay in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitation to the coast is increasing with the likes of Grau Tropical Sea National Reserve, designated in 2024, off the coasts of Piura and Tumbes housing 70% of Peru’s marine species (including hammerhead sharks and Humboldt penguins). Further south, Islas Ballestas are likened to a miniature Galapagos.

Program shortlisted for Nature Positive Responsible Tourism Award in the 2025 Global Responsible Tourism Awards (winners announced 3 November).

Abercrombie & Kent launched a new Peruvian riverboat – Pure Amazon in mid-2025. This state-of-the-art, five-star riverboat cruises the wetlands of the richly biodiverse Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve in Loreto in the northern Peruvian rainforest on voyages of three, four or seven nights. With just 12 beautifully designed suites, accommodating up to 22 guests, its intimate scale guarantees a highly personalized experience.
