A Secult initiative will bring together a series of actions and projects designed to strengthen culture and tourism in the state
A unique accent, a prized cuisine and the already well-known hospitality of its people. These are just some of the characteristics that make Minas Gerais a unique territory in the country. And it is for the purpose of celebrating all of these elements that make up the people of the State of Minas Gerais’ way of being that the State’s Government and the Secretary of State for Culture and Tourism (Secult) made 2022 the Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais.
An initiative by Secult to highlight the traditions, customs and histories of the many Minas Gerais, the Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais will be marked by numerous actions that celebrate the state’s diversity of artistic production, bringing municipalities closer and encouraging greater cross-fertilization between the culture and tourism sectors and all the professionals involved in these segments.
According to Secult’s Secretary Leônidas Oliveira, the launch of this initiative is aimed at awaking a sense of pride among the people of Minas Gerais. For Secult’s chief executive, the Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais is an action that celebrates all the characteristics of Minas Gerais and condenses all of the elements that make up the state’s rich artistic, cultural and tourist diversity into a series of activities.
“The Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais will be a year in which we celebrate who we are, in which we celebrate our cities, our districts, sub-districts, and our intense and rich culinary culture, both classic and modern. In addition, this year the cuisine of Minas Gerais is a candidate for the State of Minas Gerais’ historical heritage. Celebrating the identity of the State of Minas Gerais therefore means celebrating our culture and promoting tourism, since our greatest attraction is our warmth, since all of the people of the State of Minas Gerais really know how to make people feel welcome, whether it’s in our homes, in our kitchens or in our cities”, stresses the Secretary.
In addition to celebrating the roots of the people of Minas, the Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais will be worked on as a product of the state. To demonstrate the feeling of being a person from Minas Gerais, a logo brings together several elements that form a unit of the State of Minas Gerais. The visual identity is formed by a mandala of flowers made out of fabric and a dove of peace, the figure of a congadeiro (a character from Afro-Brazilian folklore) from Santana dos Montes, and a product line with t-shirts, mugs, backpacks, and bags, along with others, all with the words “Identity of the State of Minas Gerais”.

The Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais was presented to the public on February 23rd, during the second edition of the State Meeting of Municipal Culture and Tourism Managers, which took place at the Palácio das Artes, in the city of Belo Horizonte. In total, more than 700 professionals from a number of municipalities in the State of Minas Gerais took part in the event, which was designed to strengthen Secult’s public policies for the sectors, as well as to plan actions aimed at cross-fertilization between the culture and tourism sectors in Minas Gerais.
Numerous initiatives that commemorate the diversity of Minas’ artistic and cultural production are part of the actions of the Year of Identity of the State of Minas Gerais. One of them is the 70 Years Cemig Public Notice, which will provide R$ 10 million for projects approved under the State’s Cultural Incentive Law (LEIC) and which promote aspects of the State of Minas Gerais’ culture. Proposals from different expressions of culture and of the performing, visual, musical and literary arts will be covered under this announcement, in addition to the preservation of intangible heritage, among others.
Those making the bids can be entrepreneurs who are individuals and/or legal entities, either aiming at profit or not, who already have projects approved by the LEIC. The application period runs until June 30, 2022, and interested parties should submit their projects via the Digital Promotion and Encouragement of Culture Platform.
