WTM Latin America’s Responsible Tourism Program grows and launches awards

Interested parties will be able to enrol for the awards throughout 2019 and the result will be known at the 2020 edition of the event

Already well-established at WTM Latin America, the Responsible Tourism Program gets a boost with this year’s edition. As has been the case for several years at WTM London, the Latin American edition launches the WTM Latin America Responsible Tourism Awards. These awards, which will only be made in 2020, come in addition to the other acknowledgments offered by the WTM portfolio in the world for initiatives that collaborate for responsible tourism.

The dynamics of the awards such as the schedule, registration period, rules for participation, items analysed and judged in the projects, along with other details will be presented on Tuesday (02/04), at 17:30, at the Inspire Theatre.

Gustavo Pinto, WTM Latin America’s Responsible Tourism Program’s adviser and coordinator of the awards, says that this year will see the presentation of the categories that will be allowed to compete for the awards next year. “In this first year, initiatives will be evaluated in four categories: “Best Initiative for Reducing Poverty and Inclusion”, “Conservation of Biodiversity”, “Conservation of Culture and Cultural Heritage” and “Responsible Destination”.

In addition to the general presentation regarding the awards, the launch will feature the presence of companies that have already received the WTM World Responsible Tourism Awards in London, and will explain the importance of this acknowledgment, as well as why responsible tourism makes sense at their companies and institutions .

“By including these awards in the event’s official program, WTM Latin America is assuming a leading position in relation to this question in Latin America. What is needed is a careful look and practical actions to help responsible tourism and make it a sustainable activity in the world”, emphasizes the adviser.

For Thais Del Ben, WTM Latin America’s marketing manager, the launch of the awards draws attention to a subject that should be discussed with greater force, interest and seriousness by the entire tourism chain. “We need to encourage, contribute, recognize and apply the sound practices that are being used so that the sector can follow a sustainable path to generate opportunities while at the same time minimize the impact on society and the environment. The future is already here and what is our role in all of this?”, concludes the executive.
