“Understanding and successfully reaching the LGBTQ+ traveller” is the first webinar taking place on Monday 22 June at 2pm, British Summer Time (BST)
This Pride Month, EQUAL Africa in partnership with WTM Africa, Africa Travel Week and IGLTA is proud to present its first in a series of webinars dedicated to LGBTQ+ travel organised by WTM Global Hub – WTM Portfolio’s new online portal.
In 2012 the first United Nations’ World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) report on LGBTQ+ Tourism reported on figures of around USD 165 billion per annum as the market’s global value.
Five years later, a revised value of USD 211 billion was published by UNWTO. That’s a staggering 27% increase in spending value. Further research has shown a steady growth of travel spend within this market.
A recent survey by International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) has shown that LGBTQ+ travellers are set to be one of the first target markets to start travelling again once borders are open.
“Understanding and successfully reaching the LGBTQ+ traveller” webinar will help businesses to attract this dynamic segment by giving an overview on recent market developments and the strong relationship between LGBTQ+ tourism and equal rights, while also offering insights into the ways destinations and businesses can work together to gain credibility with LGBTQ+ travellers.
President and CEO of the IGLTA, John Tanzella will kick-start the session by unpacking the organisation’s key findings from their survey.
Consultant in LGBTQ+ Destination Development, Peter Jordan will then provide you with a better understanding of this segment and award-winning LGBTQ+ travel blogger, Meg Van Eyck will end of the discussion by providing practical ways to attract the LGBTQ traveller to your destination.
Former Secretary-General of UNWTO, Taleb Rifai says:
“We’ve a collective responsibility to stand against discrimination, fight stereotypes and become vehicles for social change. I therefore call upon each of you to embrace the benefits associated with LGBTQ+ tourism and become ambassadors for mutual understanding and respect of universal human rights. Together, we can work towards shaping a more respectful, inclusive and tolerant future in tourism”.
This is the crux of what EQUAL Africa aims to do with these webinar series.
Martin Hiller, content and creative director for Africa Travel Week said:
“These webinars will be a celebration of the significance and power of the dreams of the LGBTQ+ Traveller. Don’t doubt the importance of our time together. We can be the catalysts for shaping the future of LGBTQ+ travel in Africa and the rest of the world,”.
